Ammi Phillips (1788-1865), Portrait of Hiram Bartholomew of Kinderhook, Columbia County, NY, painted in 1837. Signed, dated, and sitter identified on the verso. Ammi Phillips was one of Americans foremost 19th C. portraitists, a native of Berkshire County, NY, who spent most of his career in Duchess County, NY. Provenance: Marvin Sadik, Past Director of the National Gallery, Washington, DC. Oil on canvas, cleaned and relined, in a lemon gold reproduction frame, frame size 21” x 26-1/2”.
