Description

Samuel Walters (British 1811-1882), the U.S. Mail Sidewheel Steamer “Arago” approaching the French port of Le Havre. The “Arago” was built in 1850 by Westervelt & Co. of New York. Samuel Walters was one of the cornerstones of the famous Liverpool school of maritime ship painters, is extremely well-known and considered the most important of Liverpool artists. Provenance: The India House Collection of Maritime Art, Hanover Square, New York City, a collection assembled during the 19th C. Oil on canvas, 52-1/4” x 71-1/2”, dated 1855 lower left. Cleaned and relined, in non-original frame, frame size 64” x 82-1/2”.
