Description
Carved and Polychrome Ship’s Carving, mid 19th C. Bust of a Young Woman with wavy brown hair wearing a diadem, gold pendant necklace, and green dress. Carved in the full round, with the bodice carved in the half round, on a metal display stand. Original untouched paint and patina, 22”H x 16”W. Provenance: Bibler & Coger, Ashley Falls, MA. Exhibited: “Ship Portraits,” 1973, The Montclair Museum, NJ; “American Folk Art,” 1974, Amherst College, Amherst, MA, illustrated catalogue, pl. 77; South Seaport Museum, 1977. New York.
