Description
Carved and Painted Tobacconist Figure, “Keokuk,” by Julius Theodore Melchers (1829-1908), noted Detroit sculptor and wood carver, known for his life-sized carvings of Cigar Store Indians. Depicts Keokuk, Chief of the Sauk and Fox Tribes, wearing a fox pelt and large medallion which would have been presented by the President of the United States. Provenance: Folk Art dealer Margaret Riordan, Stonington, CT. In old paint with wonderful surface patina, 71” overall height, on a contemporary display base with red wash.
