Federal Walnut Chest of Drawers
Augusta County, Virginia
1795-1800

The rectangular top with simple corner inlays above a conforming case with split top drawers above three graduated size drawers, all drawers with string inlay, the case enhanced with bold fluted quarter columns, ending  in an inlaid serpentine skirt ending in French feet.

Walnut is the primary wood, with pine as secondary.  Replaced brasses

Size:  38" high x 38-1/2" wide x  21-1/2" deep

While this chest has, regrettably, been refinished, it is a very fine example of a style that was greatly influenced by the boldly original styles of Baltimore cabinetmakers of the same period.  See Montgomery's American Furniture of the Federal Period, p. 184,  #141.
