Chinese Glazed Terra Cotta Roof Tile    SOLD

Glazed terra cotta roof figures have decorated the roofs of Chinese homes as far back as the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), as an outward expression of wealth, flare for decoration, and religious convictions.  They were also used to repel Evil. The roofs of Chinese homes are considered a platform of communication between Heaven and Earth.  The Phoenix Bird is the most desirable figure, and is typically displayed at the apex or highest point on the roof.

This Phoenix is circa 1890-1910.  It was removed from a roof around the turn of the century.  Minor damage and loss.   Size:  22" long x 23" high as displayed on stand.
