Pair of Important Tobacco Jars from The J.Welles Henderson Collection
Left: French Carved Wood Tobacco Jar in the Form of a Sailor, late 19th C. Hat marked "Le Marin," heart shaped earring, hinged head, anchor decoration on collar, compartment for matches and pipe on base. Copied from earlier forms in pottery. Chip on hat, 12" tall. (KR-10-27)

Both jars are from The J. Welles Henderson Collection, which recently published a book entitled Jack Tar: The Life of the Sailor. The Welles Collection was exhibited at The Philadelphia Maritime Museum.
